Whitehaven welcomes new graduates at two-day Brisbane orientation event.

Whitehaven welcomed its newest cohort of graduates last week during a two‑day orientation event in Brisbane. The program marked the beginning of their two‑year development journey, bringing together graduates from a range of disciplines to learn about Whitehaven’s culture, values and operations.

Early Careers Manager Shawn Stevenson opened the event and said the orientation provides an important foundation for graduates as they begin their careers with Whitehaven.

“Our orientation program is really about helping graduates understand who we are and how we work. Not just the systems and processes, but the people and the culture behind them,” Shawn said. “It’s a chance for them to build relationships early and start getting a feel for the kind of impact they can make here.”

Across the two days, graduates heard from senior leaders across the business who shared insights into Whitehaven’s history, STRIVE values, operational drivers and strategic priorities. Leaders provided perspectives on safety, environmental stewardship, cultural heritage, community engagement and broader industry dynamics, giving graduates a well‑rounded introduction to the company.

Shawn said the strong leadership participation underscored Whitehaven’s commitment to developing its future workforce. “It makes a big difference for graduates to hear directly from the people who shape our business.

“Our STRIVE values — Safety, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Value and Excellence — sit at the centre of everything we do, and introducing those early helps us build the kind of culture we want to see right across the organisation,” he added.

A highlight of day two was a visit to Whitehaven’s Remote Operations Centre (ROC). Graduates received an overview of how operational decisions are made, how technology supports site performance, and how teams collaborate across functions to ensure safe, efficient and consistent operations. The session demonstrated how real‑time data, planning systems and operational expertise come together to support Whitehaven’s sites.

Shawn said the ROC visit was a standout for the new graduates. “The ROC gives graduates a real, behind‑the‑scenes look at how our operations run day‑to‑day. They get to see how decisions are made in real time, and how collaboration and innovation come together to keep our sites running safely and efficiently.”

The program concluded with a session focused on project delivery and stakeholder management. Graduates were given insight into how major projects are planned, governed and delivered, as well as the role of effective stakeholder engagement, risk management and communication in achieving successful outcomes across the business.

Shawn said he was impressed by the graduates’ engagement throughout the two days. “You could see their enthusiasm right from the start. They asked great questions and really got involved. We’re excited to support them as they build their skills, grow their confidence and find their place within the business.”

Whitehaven looks forward to supporting the graduates through an exciting, challenging and rewarding journey as they rotate through sites and offices over the coming months, building their technical capability while gaining hands-on experience across their disciplines.
