Whitehaven Coal (Whitehaven) believes the local communities in which we operate should be the main beneficiaries of our presence and we are focused on building local prosperity, improving quality of life, and ensuring our regional towns thrive.
These guidelines apply to sponsorships made by Whitehaven from the corporate head office or any of our operational sites. Our focus is on programs that can deliver greatest long-term benefits to the local communities that host our operations. Successful sponsorship opportunities must have significant local, regional, national or international reach and align with the principles outlined in these guidelines.
Definitions
Sponsorship: Whitehaven regularly enters into sponsorship agreements with community organisations for mutual benefit.
The benefits to Whitehaven in return for sponsorship will be agreed by both parties and may include:
- Appropriate recognition as agreed by both parties during the application process;
- Display and promotion of the Whitehaven brand prior to and during the project or event;
- Verbal, written and visual acknowledgement at the project or event.; and
- Opportunities to involve Whitehaven employees and their families prior to and during the project or event.
Whitehaven seeks to support projects and events that:
- Directly support Whitehaven ‘s communities of influence;
- Enhances community wellbeing and cohesion; and
- Creates shared value for Whitehaven and its communities
A sponsorship is for a fixed term, determined by a time frame, occasion or event.
Areas of support: In line with the Whitehaven Stakeholder Engagement and Community Investment Strategy, Whitehaven‘s sponsorship activity will support one or more of the following areas of interest:
- Economic prosperity and resilience – town liveability, community services, facilities and infrastructure
- Environment – climate, environment and water (supply, drought and water treatment)
- Education, training and employment, – jobs for locals, upskilling, future of work*, career pathways for local youth
- Community health and wellbeing – through services, availability of staff and liveability
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement – support and promote initiatives that collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, managed via Whitehaven’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)
Whitehaven will not support commercial, for-profit businesses or projects, events and initiatives not aligned with Whitehaven’s values.
Funding criteria
Principles governing sponsorship decisions include:
- Alignment with Whitehaven’s identified areas of support;
- Potential to develop strategic partnerships with community organisations, including creation of term agreements with appropriate organisations;
- Alignment with Whitehaven brand and values;
- Relationship and connection to Whitehaven and its community;
- Potential for broad community impact;
- Support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement;
- Long-term sustainability of organisation or initiative regardless of Whitehaven support; and
- Potential to involve Whitehaven employees and local Whitehaven operations.
