ASX:WHC:

Whitehaven Coal is proud to be the leading Australian coal producer.

Throughout our 20-year history, we have helped to power developed and emerging economies in Asia where there is strong and growing demand for our product, particularly for use in high-efficiency, low-emissions coal-fired power stations. Our coal is highly sought-after for its unique properties, including the fact it delivers among the lowest carbon emissions per tonne of coal consumed in the seaborne trade.

Following the transformational acquisition of the Blackwater and Daunia mines, our portfolio will shift toward metallurgical coal, with approximately 70% of our revenue expected to come from metallurgical coal and 30% from thermal coal.

We expect demand for our products to remain strong, particularly throughout our key Asia markets. Metallurgical coal is a critical component in steel making and our thermal coal will continue to have an important role to play in supporting global energy security during the multi-decade energy transition.

We operate six mines (five open-cut and one large underground mine) in the Gunnedah Coal Basin of NSW and Bowen Basin of QLD. Our operating assets are complemented by two high-quality, near-term and large-scale development assets being Vickery, near Gunnedah, and Winchester South, near Moranbah.

These operations are supported by offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Gunnedah, Brisbane and Tokyo.

Over more than two decades, including over 15 years as a publicly-listed entity on the Australian Securities Exchange, we have developed a reputation for excellence in project delivery, safe operation, and targeted investment in the local economy and community.

We are proud of our people at Whitehaven, and we work hard to support and reward them throughout their career.

In NSW, around 75% of our 2,750-strong workforce lives in the local communities around our mine sites, ensuring benefits flowing from our operations are seen and felt locally.

Our workforce of more than 2,100 in QLD is predominantly FIFO and DIDO from across regional QLD.

Supporting communities

Whitehaven is focused on promoting local prosperity, building local community capacity and ensuring our regional towns thrive, so the benefits of our presence go beyond our workforce and beyond the life of any single asset.

We understand the importance of mining to regional areas, and our commitment to building stronger local communities is part of our DNA.

We’re proud to be the largest employer in North West NSW and of the lasting community-based partnerships we have established over two decades of continuous operation. We look forward to delivering the same positive impact in Central QLD for decades to come.

Our strategy

Our vision is to be the benchmark coal investment on the ASX.

Our strategy is to own and operate large, lower-cost mines producing a mix of high-CV thermal coal and premium semi-soft coking coal, and to increase our share of the growing market for these products in our region.

We produce a premium coal thermal product – high-energy, low-ash, low-sulphur – used in high-efficiency, low emissions (HELE) coalfired power stations. In addition, we are rebalancing our portfolio by increasing our production volumes of metallurgical coal in response to global demand.

As our smaller mines reach their end-of-life, we are transitioning towards a portfolio of large scale, long-life assets to build greater efficiencies and productivity gains. This transition is supported by Whitehaven having one of the most robust mine development pipelines in Australia. Further gains will be realised through our investment in technologically advanced equipment for large-scale operations.

We are committed to skills development and building a high-performance culture.

In maintaining a high-quality, large scale, cost-efficient and long-life asset base, we are able to manage fluctuations in the commodities price cycle. We aim to remain lowly geared as this allows us to stay nimble.

In our decision making, we ask ourselves: Does this decision strengthen our sustainability by (i) building a strong, long-life business, (ii) operating responsibly, (iii) supporting regional growth?

We aim to have free-flowing and transparent lines of communications with stakeholders.

High-quality coal

Coal has been the fastest growing energy source over the last ten years and global demand continues to rise, especially in South East Asia.

Our coal helps power regional economies through its contribution to energy generation and steel production and is highly sought-after for its unique properties, including the fact it delivers among the lowest carbon emissions per tonne of coal consumed in the seaborne trade.
