Our coal is sought-after for offering some of the lowest carbon emissions per tonne in the seaborne trade. It’s a critical resource the world needs to grow and thrive.
The strong ongoing demand for our products, particularly among developed and emerging economies across Asia, means we will continue to provide Australia with the export income it needs for national growth and prosperity.
Whitehaven today
Today, we’re one of Australia’s leading coal producers and we’re proud of it. Coal is in our DNA and our work is critical for people, industries and communities both here in Australia and overseas.
We operate six mines across NSW and QLD, producing metallurgical coal that’s critical for steelmaking and thermal coal that will support the world’s energy security as we move through the energy transition. Alongside these sites are two high-quality, large-scale development assets – and we have offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Gunnedah, Brisbane and Tokyo.
As we continue to evolve and as the world around us changes, one thing remains constant: our ability to adapt and deliver.

Our strategy
Our strategy is to own and sustainably operate large, cost-efficient mines producing high quality coal to meet the energy needs of our customers and support economic development. Our long-held strategic goal has been to grow our metallurgical coal business.
We produce a premium coal thermal product – high-energy, low-ash, low-sulphur – used in high-efficiency, low emissions (HELE) coalfired power stations. In addition, we are rebalancing our portfolio by increasing our production volumes of metallurgical coal in response to global demand.
As our smaller mines reach their end-of-life, we are transitioning towards a portfolio of large scale, long-life assets to build greater efficiencies and productivity gains. This transition is supported by Whitehaven having one of the most robust mine development pipelines in Australia. Further gains will be realised through our investment in technologically advanced equipment for large-scale operations.
We are committed to skills development and building a high-performance culture.
In maintaining a high-quality, large scale, cost-efficient and long-life asset base, we are able to manage fluctuations in the commodities price cycle. We aim to remain lowly geared as this allows us to stay nimble.
In our decision making, we ask ourselves: Does this decision strengthen our sustainability by (i) building a strong, long-life business, (ii) operating responsibly, (iii) supporting regional growth?
We aim to have free-flowing and transparent lines of communications with stakeholders.
The coal to power the world
Global demand for high-quality coal remains strong – especially in South-East Asia.
We meet that demand with high-quality, low-emissions coal (delivering among the lowest carbon emissions per tonne of coal consumed in the seaborne trade). Our coal helps power regional economies – enabling more progress for more of the world.
How we operate
A positive legacy for local communities
NSW’s Gunnedah Basin and QLD’s Bowen Basin – and the communities in those regions – are as much a part of our story as the coal we produce and the workforce that brings it to the world. Creating long-lasting social and economic value in the communities we operate is as essential as ever.

Our environmental management approach aims to protect the environment and minimise adverse impacts from our operations. We progressively rehabilitate or restore disturbed areas – and offset any impacts that cannot be avoided, minimised or rehabilitated.
