Maules Creek and Werris Creek open for Whitehaven community days

More than 800 people came through the gates as Whitehaven Coal opened its doors at the latest Community and Family Days.

The Open Days at the Maules Creek and Werris Creek mines are an opportunity for locals to learn more about Whitehaven Coal mining operations and the extent of our presence in North West NSW, including our growing local workforce and strong record of community contribution.

Around 600 people from across the local region attended two events at the Maules Creek mine, while a further 220 people enjoyed a range of activities at the Werris Creek operation.

Whitehaven Coal CEO and Managing Director Paul Flynn said Whitehaven is a big part of the local community and we take great pride in our long-standing links with the local townships where we operate and the majority of our workforce lives.

“Our community open days last year were a great success and very popular with locals, as a result of very positive feedback it was an easy decision to conduct open days again this year.

“We’re always looking for new ways to engage with the local community, and for community members themselves to interact with Whitehaven more directly. That’s why we established an office in the main street of Gunnedah, so people can ask questions, enquire about job opportunities, or find out more about what we do and how we operate.

“Everyone who lives locally knows about Whitehaven’s work, but only the people who work at Whitehaven get to see it up close every day. Apart from this being a great day for families to see the mining equipment and trucks at work, we think it’s important that the community understands the process of coal mining and sees the important work we’re doing to rehabilitate mining land and return it to productive use.

“It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about Whitehaven. What many people don’t know is that since we started as a small operator in the Gunnedah Basin in 1999, we’ve become Australia’s largest independent coal producer”, said Mr Flynn.
