Local community digs deep to support families across North West NSW this Christmas
Gunnedah Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Appeal is in full swing as the local community bands together to support people in need and bring Christmas cheer to those affected by the recent floods.
While Christmas is a time for joy, it can also be challenging and isolating for people doing it tough. It’s been a challenging year for many in the community and the persistent flooding has taken an emotional and financial toll.
The Salvation Army has been a constant source of support in recent months, providing grants and assistance to help the flood recovery.
Now, as Christmas approaches, Whitehaven Coal is working with the Salvation Army to support local families and ensure people across the community can celebrate Christmas. Whitehaven employees and their families have donated a range of items in recent weeks, including movie gift vouchers, pool passes, grocery vouchers, hampers, non-perishable food, drinks and kids toys and gifts.
The items were collected at Whitehaven’s mines across North West NSW and its offices in Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane, before being delivered to the local Salvation Army on 13 December.
Peter Hall from the Salvation Army Gunnedah thanked Whitehaven employees for their contribution.
“It’s great to see members of our community looking after each other,” Mr Hall added.
“The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal plays a critical role in supporting struggling families at Christmas and we’re very grateful for the support of Whitehaven’s employees and everyone else who’s donated to the cause.”
Whitehaven General Manager Community Engagement, Darren Swain, praised the work the Salvation Army has done all year to assist the local community.
“It’s been a challenging year for local communities across North West NSW but the region’s resilience and compassion has shone through once again,” Mr Swain added.
“The Salvation Army has played a hugely important role in providing support to people in need throughout the year and we are proud to be supporting their Christmas Appeal.”
“Christmas is a time to come together with family and friends, but it’s also about giving back.”
“It’s great to see our people digging deep and contributing to our community. We’re delighted to support such an important cause and we hope these donations will enable families across the region to celebrate a safe and happy Christmas.”
The Salvation Army will now manage the process of distributing items to people in need. If you or someone you know is doing it tough, head to the Salvation Army’s website to find out how you can access support https://www.salvationarmy.org.au/.
