NCO Mines Rescue Team Shines at Western Mines Rescue Competition
Whitehaven’s Narrabri Coal Operations (NCO) Mines Rescue Team has demonstrated their skill, professionalism and teamwork, achieving an outstanding second place at the Western Mines Rescue Competition held at Angus Place Colliery on Friday 29 August.
The team – Matt Bailey, Brad Joliffe, Nick Hurrell, Zack Oswald, Cameron Yates, Peter Quirk and Nick Buchanan – represented NCO with pride, supported by trainer and mentor Chris Williams. Their performance was a testament to months of preparation, dedication and a strong team bond.
In addition to the team’s overall success, Zack Oswald was awarded the trophy for Best Theory, recognising his individual excellence and deep understanding of rescue operations. Congratulations, Zack!
Whitehaven also celebrated the commitment of its Mines Rescue Brigade members, with 17 NCO Brigadesmen recognised for 100% training attendance over the past year. Special mentions go to:
- Mark Follington – 5 years of 100% attendance
- Blake Hilderson – 5 years of service
- Brad Joliffe – 10 years of 100% attendance and 15 years of service.
Brad was also voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates – a well-deserved honour that reflects his leadership and dedication.
These achievements highlight the strength and professionalism of our Mines Rescue Team and Brigade, enhancing NCO’s reputation across the mining industry and within the broader community.
The NCO team would like to thank sponsors, Mastermyne, Bacon Mining and Bolt Up Mining, for their support and commitment, as well as NCO Management and Departments for providing the time and support that enables the team to train and compete at the highest level.
Congratulations to all involved on a wonderful result.
